Day 30 - Djembes

I have some more pictures! None of Malabo yet, but I do have some from the student house.  I am going to try and get a better one of the house from the outside...I thought the one I had was better than what it actually is.

Mine and Sarah's room

I try to make my bed look like a princess canopy during the day :)

Had to put a picture up somewhere!

Reed's room

Our porch/storage

Map of Malabo that David painted! If you click on it, the student house is just south of La Presidencia...one of the buildings drawn.  Don't mind the big planet on it...David got bored one day

Laundry room, which is the other half of the kitchen

Another little storage room

Luxury bathroom!!

We had our normal classes today and then right after Econ we went to one of David's friends house's...his name is Pepe and he throws these little drum circle gatherings.  I had met all of the people there except for Ana, Arturo and another woman whose name I can't remember, but she came with Arturo.  The other people there we had met at the French Cultural Center...Leonardo, Gafar, Sinsy, Luisa and Pepe.  The drums we used are called Djembes...they are the kind that sit on the floor and you put between your legs and play with your hands.  They first taught us three basic notes...one you hit the center of the drum, the second one is the outter part, the third is the rim and you kind of roll your palm over the edge...and then we continued by doing different rhythms...it was so much fun!! I really enjoyed it and was glad that they invited us.  Plus, Pepe is a good cook and the food he made was delicious!  Next time they have one, I will try and take some pictures!  All of these events we are going to are really helping me learn Spanish faster!!

Day 29 - Uneventful Day

Well, today has been kind of uneventful. We had our normal classes...minus Environmental Science since he flew to London for work today...but we did get to go to the Paseo Maritimo today again!  David is training for this marathon up Mt. Cameroon in two weeks when we are in Moka conducting our research...so he ran about 11 miles while my lazy self ran I think maybe two....hey better than nothing!!

Tomorrow after class I think we are going to this drum circle thing that Gafar, one of David's friends from Egypt, invited us to.  It sounds fun! Plus it would be a cool way for us to meet new people!

Tomorrow I will post some pictures of the student house and possibly Malabo! It is just hard to get pictures since a lot of things are illegal to photograph here.

Hasta luego,
Lindsey

Day 28 - Almost a Month Abroad

It's kind of hard to believe that I have been living here for just shy of a month now...it feels like time is going fast, but slow at the same time because I miss everyone from home.  It's a good miss though because I think to truly appreciate the people in your life, you have to miss them sometimes.  And I don't mean in a way where you haven't talked in a day or two, or where you could take a little drive to go and see them...I mean  a real separation.  I've thought about it before, as I'm sure others have too, but I think it is one of those concepts that in order to really grasp, you have to experience it for yourself....sorry to get all deep there...but when my internet isn't working...which is one of the only amenities I have here and I am the only one awake...my mind wanders!  Needless to say, I already can't wait to be reunited with all of my family and friends!

Anyways...today has been filled with a few firsts for me. An example would be that I got to play with Adama's daughter, Sarahmata, for a little! Adama is our guard...I'm not sure if I ever mentioned his actual name...but his wife and daughter just came to Bioko about a week ago and this morning as Adama was helping David with something, we had this little game where I kept handing her the fork and she kept throwing it...so dang cute though! I think all the little kids here are just adorable, but especially her.

I also had my first experience of how screens are put in windows in EG...they cut a big rectangle of this mesh cloth and then nail it around the windows...I mean I guess that is one way it can be done...at least we have them, but my legs are already getting knawed on...so I think I am just going to hope that we don't lose power and have the air conditioner.

But my biggest first of the day was when we went to get some dinner after class.  David, Sarah and I went to this fish restaurant...I wasn't prepared to get an entire fish though...head, tail, bones..everything! After getting the knack for getting the meat without the tiny bones, it was really delicious!! We also got fried plantains with it...yum!!  Walking back through Malabo after dinner I also noticed that there are several gyms you can join here in town...I thought that was so cool! They are tiny, but I just wasn't expecting that.  I figured if people here "worked out" it was more by playing soccer or basketball or other sports, or at the gyms in the hotels.  I guess I shouldn't just assume!

Some other little things that happened today were that we went to the Martinez Bulk with David in the morning to stock up on water since it is cheaper.  On the way back we stopped at this grocery store called Supermercado Rial because they usually sell some American brands...I was a little disappointed because I wanted to find some peanut butter, but they didn't have any.  They did have a lot of other things though...one item that I really wasn't expecting was Lean Cuisine microwave meals.

We also had our first Environment and Society class earlier tonight.  Our professor for this class also works for Marathon, but he is American and used to teach at the University of South Carolina.  He is a very interesting man and very knowledgable, but he travels a lot to London, so our class schedule is kind of weird...aka we have class on Saturdays from 1-5...ugh! But either way, I am excited to learn more about this side of science since I have always taken more anatomy and physiology geared classes!

OH! And another thing that I forgot to mention yesterday...we had a movie night last night! Nick, one of the workers at Moka who flew back to New York today, came over and he had some movies on his computer.  So we watched the new James Bond movie...man what a stressful movie...I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.  It was very good though...you all should watch it if you haven't yet!

Tomorrow we have our first Spanish quiz, so I must study!

Day 27 - First Day of UNGE Classes

Last night I was actually cold while sleeping...man was it nice!! Not waking up in a pool of sweat is like a gift!! The air conditioner in mine and Sarah's room finally was working and I was pretty cold during the night...I liked it!!

We had the morning off and then headed to Carmen's for our Spanish class. Nothing major happened except for that I was trying to make a sentence off of the top of my head and said butter when I wanted to say napkin...woopsies...at least I made everyone laugh! Then after we had our first class at UNGE!!  It was for Natural Resource Economics and our professor is named Matoha.  He is a super interesting man...did his undergrad in Spain, got a masters degree in Seattle, worked in Washington for awhile, then he got offered a job with the US Embassy here since he is from here, but didn't like the ambassador at the time, so now he works with Marathon and teaches at UNGE.  Wow that sentence was a run on...sorry! haha  Anyways, he has a really cool story...I can't wait until we really get started learning stuff because I never have taken and Econ class before.  He even is a published author and planning an international jazz festival here!!

Tomorrow we will have all three classes...we haven't started out Environmental Science class yet.

Something that I have been picking up on the last few days...which I don't think I have talked about yet in any of my blog posts, but forgive me for repeating if I have....is that the taxis have kind of their own language with how they honk.  They are just always honking and they have several meanings to them...for example...there is a honk saying "hey I'm a taxi," then there is one for "yes get in,"  and one for "don't cross I'm not stopping," among others.  It is interesting and very, very annoying.

Hopefully sometime this week I can get some pictures of Malabo to show you all, but here are three pictures that Reed took that I really love!!  Iphone pictures for the win!

This picture is just gorgeous. Plus Florentino, my favorite guide, is in it!!

Day 26 - First Field Trip

Moraka Playa camp

I got to sleep in today...woo hoo!! I woke up around 9:30, made myself a nice cup of strawberry flavored tea and finished the book that I had almost gotten done reading before the Caldera expedition.  It was really nice to have some free time and just do nothing basically.

Then after lunch, Antonio came over and David took us on a little field trip...we went to the beach in Sipopo!! It was so cute! Very small, but the water was awesome.  It actually reminded me of the beach at Blue Marsh...for those who aren't from Reading or Leesport, it is a beach that is on a lake...because there were basically no waves crashing.  The water was so calm and so blue.  Although, this was much, much cleaner than Blue Marsh.   It almost reminded me of the lagoon down by Moraka Playa the way the water was.  But there was a section that was roped off that was designated for people to swim, they has jet skis you could rent and they even little swimming lanes in the middle of this dock that you could jump of off.

There even was a Sofitel hotel on the beach and it had this really awesome bridge out to this island that the hotel actually owns.  Sarah and I tried to sneak out on it, but there were guards...maybe next time!! It was nice just being able to swim around and relax.  It was kind of cloudy and actually pouring right now...lucky we missed the rain...but it being a bit cloudy made it so much better because it wasn't ungodly hot!!

What a great way to spend my first lazy Sunday out of the jungle!  Tomorrow we start all of our classes at UNGE!! And another good thing is that I finally got my camera to work with my computer and I have uploaded pictures from the expedition!!! Now you all can see what I have been describing!! I hope you think it is as beautiful as I did.  Oh and I threw in a picture of all the bug bites I have on my ankles...mosquitos are not my favorite...
